On 22 May, the UCT community reflected on South Africa’s last 20 years of freedom and democracy through a concert that showcased some of SA’s best artists as well as a ceremony where a UCT “time capsule” was put together and UCT’s ring road was renamed.

The ceremony kicked off with UCT honouring the life and legacy of the late great leader, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, by renaming Ring Road (which is the road that encircles Upper Campus) as Mandela Circle/ iSekile kaMadiba/ Madiba Sirkelpad.

To remind future generations of what 20 years of democracy has meant to UCT, the university created a “time capsule” which captured a bit of the best of 2014. Amongst other things, included in this “time capsule” was a rugby ball signed by this year’s Varsity Cup champions, the UCT Ikey Tigers.

The concert then kicked off and consisted of a wide variety of entertainment; from the golden oldies to the latest hits. The likes of PJ Powers, Freshly Ground, Vusi Mahlasela and Mi Casa managed to get the large audience dancing in joyous celebration.

The night was a great success for all involved and had everyone looking forward to the next 20 years.
