Intervarsity Cup Action
This year’s Intervarsity Cup was hosted by Stellenbosch on the weekend 9 – 10 May. The Intervarsity Cup is a tradition held between UCT and Maties where the two Universities compete against each other in 26 different sports (sailing, squash, hockey, netball etc.) in one weekend. Despite the wide range of sports on display, the biggest event is usually the rugby. To clarify, the Intervarsity Cup is a completely separate event from the Varsity Cup which is the premier SA university rugby competition held from February to April between 8 universities across SA.
This year, a fearsome battle between the Ikey Tigers and Maties made for an entertaining game. The Ikey Tigers lost their Intervarsity rugby clash against Maties 18-19, ending a ten-game winning streak they had engineered in the Varsity Cup and in the first few games of the WP Super league.
No overall trophy was handed out this year but totalling the overall wins it indicates that the University of Stellenbosch were the overall winners based on the number of cumulative wins in each sporting category. Click on the pic below to view the results.
Maties might have taken the Intervarsity Cup this year but after losing twice to UCT in the Varsity Cup, the spirit of the tigers will haunt them. Inter-varsity returns to Cape Town next year with UCT hosting the event.
