On 30 June until 4 July, the USSA Rugby Games were held at Rhodes University in Grahamstown where the relatively young Tigers, showed some excellent performances in the three games they played. The Ikey Tigers won one out of their three games and were placed 6th in this year’s tournament.

The tournament first kicked off with a local rivalry between the Tigers and Maties. This was a battle to the end as both teams were relentless at not giving in. Unfortunately, UCT lost by a whisker, the final score being 32-33.

This initial defeat gave the fairly younger Ikeys squad the hunger to learn and move forward as they bounced back on day two with a 29-24 win over NMMU.

Our Varsity Cup champions were looking good but the last game was a toughly-fought affair. Facing Shimlas, the Ikey Tigers lost 19-22 and with that defeat, relinquished fifth place to Shimlas and had to settle with sixth place overall.

The tournament presented itself with some stiff competition but the overall value of a tournament of this nature has strongly benefited a lot of the younger players in the Ikey Tigers squad. The final champions of the tournament went to Tuks who beat reigning champions UJ 37-29. Further results of the tournament are in the table below:
