IkeysVibe Social Touch rugby kicks off

The first Ikeys Vibe touch rugby tournament took place on Tuesday February 7th on the UCT Greenmile as part of the SRC Sports Showcase. The day included over 100 players and an amazing array of sponsorship from 100Plus Isotonic Sportdrink and IkeysVibe partners Virgin Active, Kauai and Tiger Tiger, while Red Bull Mobile supplied a mobile DJ who provided live music throughout the day.

On the blisteringly hot day in Cape Town, the tournament started with casual games of touch rugby taking place every 20 minutes, which saw both day students and residents have some fun and showing off impressive skills. The morning also included an exciting all-girls encounter between the First Ladies of Graca and the Green Machines of Tugwell and a group of American exchange students learning rugby for the first time through playing a casual game of touch with their UCT fresher peers.

The teams that were looking to up the ante with a bit more competition were invited back to play in the knockout tournament – they included Glenres, Leo Marquard, Kopano, College House and Team Chicken Leggys (Day Students).

The semi-finals eventually saw Glenres, playing their 3rd game in succession in the heat, continue their winning run and beat Leo Marquad 2-1. In the other semi final, College House and Kopano lived up to their campus rivalry in a tight fought 5-5 game, with College eventually scoring the winning try in sudden death extra time.

The intense heat took its toll on the teams – who had to tactically put rolling substitutions, additional members of the crowd and the complimentary cans of 100 Plus sports drink to good use.

The outcome left Glenres and College to fight it out for the highly contest first place prize of a R500 team meal sponsored by IkeysVibe partners Kauai. In a close 4-3 game, College held out to win the grand prize, while Glenres all won backpacks from IkeysVibe partner Virgin Active for their efforts. Graca, who had won the all girls match against Tugwell earlier in the morning, also all received Savaas Hair vouchers.

Thanks everyone who got stuck into the first tournament of 2012, which kicked off the IkeysVibe weekly touch rugby social league. Thanks to Maki Gubangxa, for assisting with the refereeing on the day and Nick Lassen and Andrzej Ogonowski for organising the tournament.

Special thanks to SRC Sports Showcase Sponsors 100Plus Isotonic Sportdrink, our partners Kauai, Virgin Active Claremont, Savaas Hair for the excellent prizes and Tiger Tiger and Red Bull for the extra vibe.
